Index brings a portrait of the quality of life of healthcare professionals in the country

Afya developed a proprietary scale called Afya MedQoL Index to monitor the mental health of Brazilian medical professionals in all phases of their careers, from undergraduate studies to the practice of the profession. The company identified that there was no validated instrument specifically developed to carry out this measurement in the health segment.

The director of Afya's Research & Innovation Center, Eduardo Moura, explained that the methodology was published in BMJ Open, an open-access journal dedicated exclusively to the dissemination of medical research. The tool brings together 13 indicators organized into dimensions that reflect well-being, institutional support, and perceived stress.

According to Eduardo Moura, the index allows tracking trends, identifying risk factors, and evaluating the effectiveness of interventions. The company states that it began measuring what really matters to promote concrete changes in the lives of those who care for the health of the Brazilian population.

Why this matters

The index offers for the first time a validated tool to systematically measure the quality of life of Brazilian doctors, which can directly impact the quality of healthcare for the population. Healthcare professionals, hospital managers, and public policy makers can use this data to implement improvements in working conditions and institutional support for doctors. Publication in an international scientific journal gives credibility to the methodology and can serve as a basis for future studies in the sector.
