695 thousand euros to "improve comfort" in school and sports facilities

A Voz de Trás-os-Montes14 September 2026 at 22:37

The municipality of Vila Real will invest 695 thousand euros in improving comfort conditions in school and sports facilities frequented by children and young people. The investment will be distributed across five facilities, covering educational establishments and sports infrastructures of the municipality.

In terms of distribution, the Douro School Centre receives approximately 183 thousand euros, the Basic School 1 and Kindergarten of Araucária almost 52 thousand euros, and the Basic School 1 + Kindergarten of Bairro de São Vicente de Paula slightly more than 79 thousand euros. For sports facilities, the Sports Pavilion receives 195 thousand euros and the Fausto Carvalhais Pavilion almost 148 thousand euros.

The interventions include the repair and improvement of existing HVAC systems, as well as the installation of air conditioning systems in spaces that currently do not have them. The council states that these works respond to the challenges of climate change, in a context of longer heat periods and higher temperatures.

The Mayor of Vila Real, Alexandre Favaios, highlighted that the municipality is preparing the facilities to meet the new demands and ensure better conditions for children and young people. The mayor also stated that this investment represents a first step, with the municipality being attentive to the needs of other spaces that may benefit from similar interventions in the future.

Why this matters

The residents of Vila Real see a significant municipal investment of 695 thousand euros dedicated to improving comfort conditions in schools and sports pavilions that their children and young people attend daily. The repair and air conditioning installation interventions will directly benefit the users of these spaces during the hottest months, responding to a growing concern with the consequences of climate change. The Mayor, Alexandre Favaios, states that this is only a first step, signaling that other facilities may benefit from similar interventions in the future.
