Sydney Sweeney, star of the series "The Handmaid's Tale" and "Euphoria", lost 200 thousand followers after starring in a controversial advertising campaign for the Novig app, specialized in sports betting and predictions. The campaign generated strong negative backlash among female athletes.
In the advertisement, the actress appears with her body covered only by sports materials, which provoked criticism from athletes who accused Sydney of contributing to the sexualization of women in sports. An unidentified athlete declared being furious with the commercial, stating that the campaign would be a slap in the face of all women.
This is not the first controversy involving Sweeney and advertising campaigns. Last year, she starred in a campaign for the American Eagle jeans brand that was pointed out as racist and sexist, although it received praise from former President Donald Trump. The campaign played on the phonetic similarity in English between the words "jeans" and "genes".
