In less than 48h: two off-duty police officers are killed in Senador Camará and São Gonçalo

extra15 September 2026 at 01:23

Two off-duty military police officers were killed in Rio de Janeiro in less than 48 hours. The first case occurred on Sunday dawn in Senador Camará, in the West Zone, when Corporal José Luiz Porto Junior, 42 years old, assigned to the 14th BPM of Bangu, was shot. A man identified as the shooter was arrested hours later.

The second assassination occurred yesterday afternoon, near a shopping mall in the center of São Gonçalo, in the Metropolitan Region. The victim was Corporal Rayllan Machado Carino, who worked at the 1st BPM of São Gonçalo. After being shot, he was rescued by colleagues from his own unit and taken to the Central Emergency Room in the Zé Garoto neighborhood, but did not survive his injuries. The perpetrators managed to flee.

The Military Police Command regretted the death of the officer and the occurrence was registered at the Homicide Police Station of Niterói and São Gonçalo, responsible for investigating the circumstances of the crime.

With these two episodes, the number of military police officers killed in violent situations since January rises to 32.

Why this matters

The violence against military police officers directly affects the public security of the state of Rio de Janeiro, both due to the risk that the agents themselves face and the impact on the available personnel for patrolling. Readers in the region follow with concern the increase in attacks on police officers, especially after the mark of 32 agents killed in violent situations since January.
