Almodôvar Town Hall Grants Housing Plot to Attract Doctors to the Municipality

Correio Alentejo14 September 2026 at 01:15

The Almodôvar Town Hall will make available a plot in the Mártir e Santo Municipal Subdivision for the construction of a single-family dwelling, with the aim of settling doctors in the municipality. The council advanced this measure under the Municipal Regulation for Granting Incentives for the Settlement of General and Family Medicine Doctors at the Almodôvar Health Unit.

According to the municipality, the provision of this plot implements a possibility provided for in the municipal regulation, which establishes, in addition to financial incentives for housing and travel, the possibility of the Municipality deciding to open procedures for the sale of municipal urban properties intended for doctors who meet the defined requirements.

The council explains that this measure will allow an eligible General and Family Medicine doctor to acquire land for the construction of their own permanent residence, thus linking professional settlement in the municipality to the possibility of establishing residence there.

Why this matters

The inhabitants of Almodôvar benefit directly from this measure, as attracting doctors to the municipality can resolve primary healthcare access problems that frequently affect rural areas. The municipal regulation already provided for these incentives, and the availability of the plot represents the implementation of an already established policy to combat the shortage of family doctors in the region.
