Swiss Hagel to Insure Madeira Banana Crops

The Swiss insurer Hagel won the public tender to insure crop insurance for 2,750 Madeiran farmers who produce more than 22 thousand annual tonnes of Madeira banana. The contract was awarded for approximately 669 thousand euros, below the base price of 713 thousand euros set by GESBA, and is valid until August 31, 2027. After four failed tenders last year, this is the first to attract bidders, with Hagel overcoming proposals from CA Seguros and broker Atlas MGA. Payment will be supported by GESBA at approximately 200 thousand euros and the remaining 469 thousand euros by the PEPAC program 2023-2027.

Fire in scrubland mobilizes 15 firefighters in Furneira

A forest fire broke out this afternoon in the Furneira area, in Garachico, Madeira, mobilizing 15 firefighters from two corporations. The Voluntary Firefighters of Câmara de Lobos and the Madeiran Voluntary Firefighters were called at 5 PM and are on site with four resources, including three heavy vehicles and one light vehicle, to fight the flames.
