Selective collection in Vila de Rei reached, on August 31, a record rate of 50.25 percent across all urban waste in the municipality, an unprecedented value at the municipal level. More than half of the materials discarded by the population now has a sustainable route, being properly separated, collected and redirected for recovery and recycling, instead of being indiscriminately deposited in landfill.
This positive evolution results from a set of strategic investments carried out by the municipality in recent years. The measures included the expansion of the ecopoint network, the start of dedicated biowaste collection, the reinforcement of collection routes for green waste, wood and bulky items, as well as the creation of nearby municipal services for used cooking oils, textile waste and waste electrical and electronic equipment.
The municipality highlights that permanent environmental awareness initiatives and the direct involvement of families and local commercial businesses represented the decisive element for this result. Exceeding the 50 percent threshold also allows the municipality to reduce costs associated with disposal fees and the Waste Management Fee, anticipating compliance with national and European environmental directives.
The Municipal Council of Vila de Rei publicly thanked the population of the municipality for their collaboration and reaffirmed the intention to maintain investments in the sector through new operational solutions for the management of material resources, aiming to consolidate the municipality's position in the field of territorial sustainability and environmental protection.
