Guarulhos Airport to Have Anti-Drone System After Trafficking Incidents and Over 100 Flights Affected in the Last Year

oglobo14 September 2026 at 21:07

São Paulo International Airport in Guarulhos will be the first in Brazil to operate a drone detection and neutralization system. The measure was taken by the Ministry of Ports and Airports, which sent the project guidelines to the National Civil Aviation Agency.

Since last year, the unauthorized presence of drones has caused delays or diversions in at least 125 landings and takeoffs at the airport. The situation has ceased to be merely a logistical nuisance and has become a public security challenge.

The complex was chosen due to its strategic importance. The devices have also begun to be used as a tactical tool by drug trafficking. In June 2025, traffickers employed drones to monitor police patrols in the vicinity of the airport.

Why this matters

Passengers using Guarulhos will be directly affected by the reduction of delays and flight diversions caused by drone incidents. The implementation follows more than 125 documented cases in the last year and the use of drones by traffickers to spy on police patrols in the region, transforming a logistical problem into a public security issue.

Of the total, 900 million will be paid in cash at the closing of the operation and 300 million in the first quarter of 2029. This acquisition comes after the failure of merger negotiations between Puig and Estée Lauder and before the presentation of the new strategic plan of the listed Catalan company, scheduled for October.
