In testing phase, BRT and VLT begin accepting cards in Rio de Janeiro; credit has a fee

cbn14 September 2026 at 22:00

The Gentileza Terminal, in the Central Region of Rio de Janeiro, began testing the payment of BRT and VLT fares with credit and debit cards directly at the turnstiles. The measure is only available at this terminal, in an experimental phase, and there is still no forecast for expansion to the rest of the system.

The City Hall of Rio regulated the use of bank cards in the validators of the municipal transport through a resolution published in the Official Gazette on Monday. The document defines the rules for when the service is expanded to other stations and terminals.

For payment with debit card, the passenger pays the same value as the current fare. For credit, an additional charge of up to 30 cents per trip was authorized, to cover the costs of the financial operation.

This additional charge raised questions, as a municipal law from 2022, which authorized the payment of fares with contactless cards, determines that the price of the fare must correspond to the current fare value.

Why this matters

Rio passengers who use BRT and VLT may soon have another option to pay fares without needing cash or card reload. The additional fee of up to 30 cents on credit raises questions about the real cost of transportation, especially considering a municipal law that should guarantee the same fare value. The service is still in the testing phase at Gentileza Terminal and there is no forecast for expansion.

Puig buys 50% of Isdin from the Esteve family for 1.2 billion euros

Puig will buy the remaining 50% of the Isdin laboratory from the Esteve family for 1.2 billion euros, in an operation that ends 50 years of partnership between the two Catalan families. The transaction, expected to be concluded in the first quarter of 2027, will allow Puig to double its dermocosmetics business and reduce its dependence on fragrances, which represent more than 70% of the group's revenue. Of the total, 900 million will be paid in cash at the closing of the operation and 300 million in the first quarter of 2029. This acquisition comes after the failure of merger negotiations between Puig and Estée Lauder and before the presentation of the new strategic plan of the listed Catalan company, scheduled for October.
