Data center promoters in Abrantes requested a reinforcement of the electrical grid to guarantee the operation of their infrastructure. The centers already have authorization for connection to the electrical grid, but consider it necessary to increase the energy supply capacity.
The Minister of Environment and Energy warned about the high demand for energy from data centers, which have been significantly increasing throughout the country. This sector is known for its high energy consumption, which puts pressure on distribution networks.
The Abrantes case is considered "special" due to the closure of the Pego Thermal Power Plant, which occurred in 2021. The closure of this power generation unit reduced the electricity generation capacity in the region, making it more complex to meet the needs of new projects.
The authorities are analyzing the requests from the promoters, seeking to balance the needs of the technology sector with the actual capacity of the national electrical infrastructure.
