The Sintra City Council launched this Tuesday the "Sintra + Limpa" campaign, aimed at raising awareness among residents about the correct disposal of bulky waste, green waste and other materials. The local authority warns that these wastes should not be placed on public roads without first requesting their collection from the parish councils or the Municipal Water and Sanitation Services (SMAS).
Since the beginning of the year, SMAS and Sintra's Municipal Police have already initiated 167 environmental offenses for illegal waste disposal on public roads. The campaign, with the motto "In Sintra there are no excuses, contribute to 'Sintra + Limpa'", aims to reinforce information about available collection services and encourage citizens to use the appropriate channels.
The contacts provided by the campaign include the 15 parish councils for collection of bulky waste, furniture and mattresses, and SMAS for green and construction waste, through the toll-free number 800 210 020. For large electrical appliances, 800 262 333 is available, in partnership with the Eletrão system. Illegal disposal constitutes an environmental offense punishable by a fine of up to 22 thousand euros.
The campaign comes at a time when the municipality is strengthening urban hygiene resources, with investments of approximately 12 million euros in the acquisition of 39 vehicles, the installation of 1,500 new ecopoints and the acquisition of 700 large containers. A purchase of vehicles for the parish councils is also underway, with an investment of over one million euros.
