Municipality of Portalegre

SAPO Notícias14 September 2026 at 14:40

At the beginning of this school year, the Municipal Council of Portalegre delivered exercise books and activity notebooks to approximately 900 students in Basic Education in the municipality. This distribution covered all students at this education level in the municipality.

Additionally, school kits with various materials are being distributed, free of charge, to the two hundred students in the 1st cycle who receive school social support. This measure aims to support families in situations of greater economic vulnerability.

The initiative is part of a broader program of support for education by the local authority, which seeks to ensure that all students have access to the necessary materials for their school performance.

Why this matters

The approximately 200 students in the 1st cycle in situations of social vulnerability receive free material support that can significantly alleviate their families' school costs. This municipal initiative covers all almost 900 students in Basic Education in the municipality, representing a direct investment in education and equal opportunities in the region.

Environment Minister "needs to do more". "If things continue like this, the Portuguese won't be able to cope"

Rui Calafate, a commentator for CNN Portugal, criticized the Portuguese environment minister, stating that she "needs to do more", comparing the actions of Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, who "acted in defense of his populations", with the lack of support that Portuguese people are feeling from their own government. Calafate warned that "if things continue like this, the Portuguese won't be able to cope", suggesting that the Portuguese executive's response to environmental issues is failing its citizens.
