The support from 16 patrons enabled the University of Évora to award 81 scholarships in the 2025/2026 academic year, totaling €177,470. The amount was made available through the Student Social Support Fund of the University of Évora (FASE-UÉ), created in 2012, which is intended for students in situations of social emergency or proven economic hardship. The figures were announced during the Public Session Honoring the Patrons 2025|26, held on Monday at the Alentejo academy.
Rector António Candeias noted that patronage has historical importance for higher education institutions, considering that universities have always depended on support from institutions and individuals. In his view, the patrons demonstrate confidence in the university and invest in the future of students and the country by financing these supports that allow young people in hardship to continue their studies.
During the ceremony, a solidarity cheque of €5,872 was delivered to the university's Social Action Services, resulting from donations from the patrons and proceeds from a solidarity flamenco show held in July. The rector mentioned that FASE-UÉ supports cover different areas of academic life, including housing and food.
António Candeias also advocated for strengthening the role of patronage in Portugal, considering that the current legislative framework falls short of what it should be. The university intends to expand patronage to areas such as science and culture, complementing social action responses and creating new opportunities for students.
