Government prepares payment for wild boar culled and Alentejo is at the center of the problem

The Portuguese Government will test a pilot project to pay compensation to hunters for each wild boar culled in areas with excessive concentration of the species, with Alentejo being the most affected region, with six of the eight municipalities with the highest historical density of culls. The intention was announced by the Minister of Agriculture and Sea, José Manuel Fernandes, during the Field Day of InovMilho, although the compensation value, the territories covered, and the participation criteria still need to be defined. An investigation by the University of Évora, based on data from 32 hunting seasons, analyzed 449,481 culling records and confirmed that Alentejo records the highest average density of wild boar culled in the country, with Castelo de Vide, Portel, Portalegre and Avis among the municipalities with the most animals hunted. The Wild Boar Strategic Plan estimates an average population of 277,385 animals in mainland Portugal, and current legislation already allows hunting throughout the year, with the payment adding a financial incentive to existing control mechanisms.
