The Hospital Dr. Nélio Mendonça, in Madeira, performed its first medical treatments with electroconvulsive therapy today. This procedure represents a new therapeutic alternative available to patients in the region.
Electroconvulsive therapy is indicated for patients with severe mental illness. During treatment, controlled electrical currents are applied to the brain, causing a brief therapeutic seizure.
The procedure is described as safe and is performed with rigorous monitoring and muscle relaxation, always under anesthesia. This approach allows patients to receive a treatment option that was not previously available at the Madeiran hospital.
