The Socialist Party accused the Government of profiting from the increase in fuel prices. The accusation was made by the socialist secretary general, who pointed to an increase in State revenue since Luís Montenegro took office as prime minister.
According to data presented by the PS, since Montenegro took office, the State has been receiving an additional nine cents per liter of diesel and six cents per liter of gasoline. These values represent additional revenue for public finances resulting from the increase in prices charged at fuel stations.
The accusation comes in a context of continued rise in fuel prices, which has affected the purchasing power of Portuguese consumers. The Socialist Party believes the Government is financially benefiting from this situation, without that gain being reflected in support measures for families.
This criticism is part of the PS's opposition to the economic and fiscal policy of the PSD/CDS-PP executive, which has been governing in a minority since March 2024. The PS thus seeks to emphasize the difference between the increase in the fiscal burden on fuels and the negative impact that increase has on the budgets of Portuguese families.
