Spanish justice has again denied amnesty to Carles Puigdemon, the Catalan independence leader who fled Spain in 2017. The decision was made by the Spanish Supreme Court, which rejected the application of the amnesty law to the case of the former president of the Generalitat.
The decision comes after the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) gave its approval to the amnesty law on July 16. The European court considered that the law passed by the Parliament of Spain in 2024, which targeted Catalan independence supporters, was in compliance with European Union law.
The amnesty law was specifically approved to benefit those responsible for the 2017 Catalan independence process, including Carles Puigdemon and other Catalan politicians who left the country to flee Spanish justice.
Despite the favorable opinion from the CJEU, the Spanish Supreme Court maintained its position of not applying the amnesty, creating a new legal standoff between Spanish and European judicial bodies regarding Puigdemon's future.
