Fifteen districts under yellow warning due to heat

Observador14 September 2026 at 07:50

Fifteen districts in mainland Portugal are under a yellow warning due to intense heat. The districts covered are Viseu, Évora, Porto, Vila Real, Setúbal, Santarém, Viana do Castelo, Lisboa, Leiria, Beja, Castelo Branco, Aveiro, Coimbra, Portalegre, and Braga.

The yellow warning, which represents a risk situation for certain activities dependent on weather conditions, is in effect until 6:00 PM on Monday.

This warning was issued by the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA) and covers the entirety of mainland Portuguese territory, with the sole exception of the district of Faro.

Why this matters

Readers in these 15 districts should be prepared for high temperatures and possible effects of intense heat during the afternoon period. This weather warning may affect outdoor activities, the health of vulnerable groups, and energy consumption. This is a continuation of the heat wave that has been affecting mainland Portugal in recent weeks.
