"The emotion and adrenaline abstract us from the pain of carrying the processional platform"

Emílio Silva, aged 56, a volunteer firefighter and postal worker in Ponte de Lima, is one of three original members who about 15 years ago started the tradition of the Volunteer Firefighters of Ponte de Lima carrying the platform of Our Lady of Sorrows in the Feiras Novas procession. The firefighter recalls that the connection to the procession began in childhood, when he came on foot from Arcozelo with his parents, and that the idea of taking on the transport of the platform arose among the firefighters, having been presented to Father José Gomes de Sousa, who accepted immediately. According to Emílio, the emotion and adrenaline of the moment make the carriers "abstract themselves" from the physical pain of the journey, although the next day their shoulders are sore. The firefighter expresses pride in the maintained tradition and hopes that the younger ones will continue it, highlighting that the firefighters' prevention and rescue mission during the pilgrimage also includes reinforced devices at the fire station and in the Feiras Novas venue.
