Heat puts 15 mainland districts and Madeira under yellow warning

SIC Notícias14 September 2026 at 07:56

Fifteen districts in mainland Portugal and Madeira will be under yellow warning due to heat, according to information from the Portuguese Sea and Atmosphere Institute (IPMA).

The districts covered are Viseu, Évora, Porto, Vila Real, Setúbal, Santarém, Viana do Castelo, Lisboa, Leiria, Beja, Castelo Branco, Aveiro, Coimbra, Portalegre and Braga. Joining them is the Autonomous Region of Madeira.

The yellow warning will be in effect until 18:00 on Monday. This type of warning is the second most severe on a three-level scale and indicates a risk situation for certain activities dependent on weather conditions.

The high temperatures justifying this warning thus affect a vast area of Portuguese territory, covering both the north, centre and south of the mainland, as well as the island of Madeira.

Why this matters

Readers in these 15 regions need to be prepared for high temperatures and possible risks associated with intense heat during the indicated period. The yellow warning indicates a risk situation for vulnerable groups, such as the elderly and children.
